First Term
For the first term, Grade 6 students were exposed to the basics of Philippine culture and society. We inquired on the following key ideas: citizens in nation-building and the territory of the Philippines. Throughout the course of the term, we investigated on different concepts related to nation-building such as: migration, development, unity, and resources. On the other hand, we used contemporary issues, such as the issue of the West Philippine Sea as a lead into our unit on Territory. A key highlight of this term, was our outdoor trip to Baler, Aurora Province, wherein my students, using their knowledge and understanding of migration looked into its effects on the community.
Second Term
After discussing the basic facts about the Philippines, we inquired now into the government, sovereignty, and leadership. Throughout the term, we established our understanding of the different kinds of government, the challenges brought about by the different forms of government. Connecting what we learned about government, we investigated on the role of citizens in society. Our inquiry into citizenship looked into the challenges and opportunities of a citizen in the Philippines. At the end of the term, we used what we learned to create a constitution of our class.
Third Term
For the last term, we dug deeper into the concept of citizenship and looked at how citizens help in national development. Our inquiry into citizenship and development was focused on three aspects: promotion of national development, the government and national development, and the citizens and national development. We were introduced to basic economic concepts such as Gross National Product and Gross Domestic Product, knowing these two concepts helped in our understanding of how development can come about. Moreover, we also looked at issues that affect development, most especially corruption in the government. At the end of the term, we used our knowledge and understanding of development to write a research paper on national issues.
