First Term
We started our unit on 19th century European history by examining the revolutions of 1848, establishing that these revolutions were catalysts for unification movements across the continent. After establishing the conditions of Europe in 1848, we examine how the revolution affected Italy. We learned all about Giuseppe Garibaldi and the movement for the unification of Italy. We inquired into the reasons and motivations for the unification movement, significant events, and the changes that happened after before, during, and after the unification of Italy. To end our unit, we created a video or news report of how conflict affects peoples lives.
Second Term
After learning about the Unification of Italy, we inquired about the Unification of Germany. We examined Otto Von Bismarck as the leader of Germany, the motivations, and effects of the unification of Germany. After learning about Germany, we moved to North America and inquired into the US Civil War. We watched videos to learn about the start of the war, read stories of slaves, and watched the film "Glory" to understand more about this event. At the end of the unit, we created a role play on different issues that hinder our freedom.
Third Term
For the last term, we inquired about European Imperialism in Asia and Africa. We inquired on the different reasons for imperialism, the effects and changes brought about European expansionism in Asia and Africa. Linking our knowledge of European imperialism, we connected our understanding of imperialism to World War I. We examined the reasons and motivations behind the war, the living conditions of soldiers and the people, and the changes that happened after the war. At the end of the unit, we used our understanding of World War I, to create a depth studies paper focused on three essential questions of the war.
