Explorations
Our unit on Explorations began with a simple question: why do we explore? My students came up with many and varied answers to the question, like: to learn, to go beyond, to make something new or discover something new. With their responses, we began tuning-in to the unit by reading some of the early explorations in the field of science and history. We went on a field trip to know more about the explorations in history, we visited the following places: the walled-city of Intramuros, the Bahay Tsinoy (Chinese House), the San Agustin Church all in the city of Manila. As we inquired further into the unit my students learned about the early explorations of man, the advances in the fields of science and medicine because of exploration and its impact on a place, event or on people. At the end of the unit, my students realized that explorations extend our knowledge and our capabilities, explorations help us advance our thinking and open up new possibilities that would enrich our lives. At the same time, they also highlighted that though explorations are good, there are always some negative effects such as the colonization and subjugation of people.
Significant events
The unit on Significant Events was all about exploring how we humans respond to a significant event, my students explored different times in their lives that have made an impact on them and how these events changed the way they think or their perspective of something.
