Beliefs and Values
I began the unit by exploring the beliefs and values of my students. We talked about what they believe in, what their family believes and how it affects their lives and their interactions with people. To make the unit deeper and richer, we explored various beliefs in the Philippines, we visited the following: the Fo Guan Shang Mabuhay Temple and the Iglesia Ni Cristo Central Temple. Likewise, I invited other people for my students to interview, an Imam for the Muslim faith and three members from different Christian denominations. At the end of our unit, my students realized that despite the differences in beliefs and in values, each person should be open-minded and tolerant of these differences.
Human Body Systems
At the start of the unit, my students were exposed to the different body systems. They explored and identified some of its basic functions and they will try to infer how these different body systems are interconnected to one another. To go deeper into our unit, my students inquired into specific body systems in order to become experts in the unit. We were able to visit a hospital to learn how these body systems work and we also invited doctors and nurses to talk more about it. My students learned that diseases can affect the body systems and that every action that they do, such as: eating too much, not getting enough exercise, will have a detrimental effect on their lifestyle.
